Catrina is a female skeleton dressed only in a hat befitting the upper-class outfit of a European of her time. It was designed by José Guadalupe Posada, Mexican printmaker, cartoon illustrator, and lithographer.
Catrina has come to symbolize not only Day of the Dead and the Mexican willingness to laugh at death itself but originally was a well-dressed woman.
For the Day of the Dead Celebration, people use to wear costumes of Mexican skulls, the men as catrines and the women of catrinas.
